Review of Devil (2010) by Neil P — 13 Jan 2013
Due to the "shyamalan syndrome" I was expecting a twist even if he's only the producer which tends to get in the way of enjoying a film as you come up with so many scenarios the real one invariably disappoints.
Putting that aside, we are left with a nice little thriller where someone in the lift is killing the other trapped passengers. The film does a good job of making everyone a bit suspicious too. I think the film could have been improved with a bit more characterisation within the lift so we knew why they were "chosen".
One annoying aspect of the film is the awful mexican security guard who keeps spouting mystical nonsense and convenienlty spells out and narrates the films plot which is ridiculous especially in how people start to listen to him.
I also liked the opening credits of an inverted cityscape - simply but surprisingly effective. More "Saw" (far less gore and violence thoughj) than "Shyamalan" which is meant as a good thing.
