Review of Devil (2010) by Scott J — 05 May 2013
I think this movie -- like much of Shyamalan's work -- gets a bad rap. He is somewhat heavy handed with the Old Testament stuff -- him movies often have spiritual theme -- but the spiritual revelations are interesting; there is his trademark style of suspense with just glimpses of the supernatural antagonists; and there is humor (The "under the apple tree" muzak is hysterical).
But, like his movies or not, he has a distinctive voice -- you can tell it's a Shyamalan movie without looking at the credits. How many filmmakers can you say that about?
I think the shallower reviewers don't like his somewhat unorthodox and profound voice -- but the fact that his work pushes their buttons makes me like his work even more...
