Review of Devil (2010) by Cameron F — 07 Jun 2013
If the rest of The Night Chronicles films are as good as Devil, I will be a happy camper. M. Night consistently gives us scary thriller-type movies where you can actually have a spiritual experience as well. I just don't know of anyone else in Hollywood who is doing that, or has ever done that. That might be why so many critics dislike him: he has the audacity to do something quite different. That requires a lot of confidence, which I think sometimes is misinterpreted as arrogance.
Sometimes the boat needs to be rocked. Controversy is not necessarily a bad thing. In a sea of CGI, remakes and sequels, Shyamalan has the nerve to come up with his own film ideas, write them, produce them, direct them, AND get top-notch actors to star in them, time and time again.
I keep reading people who say that Night's career is over. Lol. They have been saying that now for about five years, ever since The Happening was a commercial success in spite of bad reviews. He loves what he does too much to quit. He will always find a way to continue with his art. He is friends with so many A-List actors in Hollywood. And the best is yet to come.
The actors in Devil do a superb job. The scares are about as horrifying as you can get without an R rating. And then, there is this spiritual lesson going on about a recovering alcoholic, learning to forgive, and taking responsibility for your life. It all works. I love Devil. It is short, sweet and to the point. I really could not guess who the Devil was. See if you can.
