Review of Devil (2010) by Trevor M — 06 Jun 2015
Not as shitty as you would expect from Shyamalan and quite honestly wasn't a bad watch. Is it completely over the top and the backstory taken way too seriously? Absolutely, but they kind of make it work.
It feels almost like an urban myth than a realistic movie and so a lot of weird predictable tropes and over the top lines are actually a bit forgivable. Not something I would intentionally watch again, but I didn't find myself wanting to skip to the end.
My main beef with it is that it pulls some BS reveal at the end that makes basically no sense. They provide a growing pile of evidence that the Devil is one character and then reveal it is another, without explaining away the giant pile of evidence that has been collecting.
They also never made it completely clear if the Devil was just controlling someone else or if he was also in physical form as a separate entity, because they show BOTH of those things, which is very confusing.
Also, in the end one of the characters is spared for legitimately no reason. Somehow the Devil cannot take them and they do not ever give a good reason why.
