Review of Devdas (2002) by Sumanth C — 12 Oct 2007
This is, without a doubt, my favorite Hindi film. The sets are beautiful, the acting is pretty good, and the title character is brought to life by Shah Rukh's beautiful performance. Both Shah Rukh and Madhuri put in the performances of their lives, but Aishwarya turns in a routine, expected performance- not great, but not terrible, either. Shah Rukh truly steals the show as Devdas.
Two scenes in this film strike me more than any other: the scene where Dev performs his last rites with alcohol, and the last five minutes, where Paro runs to Dev as the gates close. Truly a beautiful film; grandiose, overacted, and melodramatic as it may be at times, its humanity and brutal conclusion are what moved my heart to love this at times stubborn, difficult film.
