Review of Detroit Rock City (1999) by Michael T — 21 Jan 2009
In the period between 1976-79 boys in the "intermediate grades" in elementary school (5-7) listened to Kiss while the girls listened to, er, Sean Cassidy (who?). Before they lapsed into self-parody and flirted with disco, Kiss were a vital hard rock band who recorded a bunch of killer cuts and two essential albums (Alive & Destroyer).
This film is a nostalgic look at that era as a group of high school Kiss fans embark on a quest to catch a Kiss concert in Detroit. The film suffers from the usual problems with films of this type, however.
The misadventures, the clashes with adult authority figures, the gross-out humour. You've seen it all before. But, when was the last time anyone tried to make a film about a quest to see a Sean Cassidy concert?
