Review of Detroit (2017) by Kathryn Q — 02 Aug 2017
Saw this movie at a preview showing. In essence, it's a war movie - much like director Kathryn Bigelow's other film, "The Hurt Locker." The only difference is this really happened, and in the United States.
The performances are powerful and I predict many nominations at awards season.
I had some trouble following the plot at first because the movie weaves in and out among a large cast. Some of the pleasure of the movie is spotting well-known actors in completely different roles. Samira Wiley as a motel clerk, and the actress who plays Gilly on "Game of Thrones" as an Ohio party girl.
The violence is heart breaking, mostly because it was real - the movie is based on a true story. And watching it, with Black Lives Matter incidents running through my mind, I was struck at how so little has changed in terms of racial violence and police shootings in this country from 1967 to 2016.
