Review of Detroit (2017) by Terry M — 04 Aug 2017
The movie was great. Very sad and hard to watch. The acting was great and I think it is great to see such a varied cast but one thing that I think might have made it more powerful was to give the role of the people in the hotel especially Carl to people closer to their actual ages to portray the youthful vulnerability of these kids.
Carl was 17 in real life and played by and actor born in 1987. The oldest of the group was 26 but portrayed by Anthony Mackie, a great actor but 12 38 years old. Same issue with the white females - they were 18 but portrayed by 28 year olds.
Great acting but to get that vulnerability you sometimes need younger actors. They referred to them as "kids" and stated their ages at times but to really understand that the cops came in and murdered a 17 year old child who was playing with a started pistol and showing off to girls.
And who paid for the crime? No one. And here we are 50 years later. Now they don't even have to drop a knife and lie - they can just say they were scared. ??
