Review of Detroit (2017) by Jacob M — 15 Aug 2017
To kick things off I'm not going to compare this movie to what's happening nowadays nor am I going to lecture all of that. I'm here to rate the movie. Second the name Detroit seems more of a marketing ploy than anything it may as well as been called "Algiers Motel Incident".
The movies starts off with a powerful opening scene depicting Detroit art and the start off the riots that happening in a unlicensed bar "The Blind Pig" then from there it follows the story of what's happened at that motel instead of maybe showing that motel scene then continuing showing more of the Detroit riots.
Even said all that this movie is still very powerful and gruesome to watch. Kathryn Bigelow has come a long since she directed Point Break. Detroit is not her best movie but it's maybe her most powerful movie.
I have to give props to 2 actors for standing out. Will Poulter playing the racist cop in very convincing fashion you almost immediately want to see him get what he deserves and he plays it fantastically.
Another even though he's barely in the movie he stands out because he never plays people you hate. That's John Krasinski who plays the slimeball lawyer that ends up getting the cops out of what they did.
He's in the movie for barely 10 minutes and he leaves a lasting impression. Those 2 stand out but everyone else in the movie was also excellent especially john Boyega. One issue that not only but several people in the theater had and a few people even stepped out of the theater is that the violence is hard to watch even knowing that it's going to happen it's very hard watching the kids in the movie get their faces kicked in or whatever was happening.
I would definitely say you should check this movie out if you know nothing of the motel incident or if you know nothing of the Detroit riots it's a powerful movie.
