Review of Detroit (2017) by Dane M — 01 Sep 2017
A piece of American civil rights history I knew nothing of but I'm glad that I stumbled across it. John Botega showing depth and adding nuance to his acting repertoire and Will Poulter as mesmerising and menacing as ever.
I hated the violence and the inevitable devastating outcome, which was heartbreaking and difficult to fathom. The ending is unsatisfying as real life injustice can only ever be. The court scene / trial needed more time to draw out the motives of the witnesses and for the audience to understand our human frailties.
It felt rushed and the film suffered for it. I'll never forget the Algiers Motel incident not because it was deeply tragic and a complete travesty but because it's underlying issues - of racism and police corruption - have festered and are now endemic.
Be brave and go to see it.
