Review of Detention (2012) by Josh D — 10 May 2013
This movie begins with over-the-top, obnoxiously "hip" and "edgy" stylistic choices and dialogue, and quickly turns into a nonsensical, cliched high school slasher flick with a desperate-to-be-modern twist.
Nearly everything that is original and clever within this movie, as far as ideas go, is ruined by the gaping plot holes and frequent yet random and confusing shifts in focus and "twist" character revelations throughout the story.
Nothing seems to make any sense or give any indication that it even should, and the dialogue is at times outright painful to sit through. It feels like the director wanted to make a movie that tries(and at times succeeds) to parody popular/cliche horror movie elements, yet ends up taking itself too seriously in the end for the viewer to fully understand what is happening and why for the duration of the movie.
