Review of Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) by Nicholas M — 02 Oct 2010
Definitely not the best of tsui hark or andy lau's movie, this one is more like guy ritchie's sherlock holmes in china. the luoyang palaces, the towering buddha, the phantom's bazaar, and the costumes, etc.
may all have their appeals in the oversea markets, but are perhaps too "innovative" to make beileve the movie is actually set in ancient china. "innovative" this movie may be, the cast has however failed to deliver much outstanding performance.
in short, andy lau is still andy lau and carina lau carina lau. judging from the quality of this move, guess it won't get developed into a series like :once upon a time in china"... hope not!!
