Review of Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) by Sally A — 10 Jul 2011
A rather fun Chinese Kung-Fu adventure film that doesn't pay any attention to realism and history. While you can easily enjoy the comic book flavor, some of the atrocious CGs can take you right out of the film.
There are moments where you cannot believe that the film was released in 2011. However, the writing is competent and the action is (typically) enjoyable to watch. A nice film to relax with but nothing that would make you remember it for more than a few weeks.
Typically I would give films like this lower than 3 stars. However, the fact that the writing wasn't incredibly stupid is a plus. Which says a lot about how bad current action movies (Hollywood or foreign) have become.
It's sad nowadays an action movie that's not mind-numbingly loud and stupid is enough to deserve a high recommendation.
