Review of Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) by Steve W — 25 Sep 2011
A murder mystery done right. When high officials begin to spontaneously combust, Detective Dee is brought from an 8 year prison exile to solve the case for the Empress who jailed him.
The movie works on a lot of levels. The casting is great, Andy Lau brings the stuff and owns the role. The side characters are all intriguing, as any one of them being a potential suspect.
The plot is complex and twisted, with tons of conspiracy, action, and plenty of red herrings. It always twists and turns and changes direction, sucking you into the story and mystery.
The music, fight scenes, and camera work are all also top notch. Tsui Hark scores a winner right here.
