Review of Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) by Drew B — 30 Sep 2011
China does Hollywood. It wasn't quite like the other movies I've seen in the genre. They weren't going for "Crouching Tiger." It was clearly shooting for a Chinese version of a Hollywood blockbuster, which in a lot of ways is much harder.
While it didn't exactly nail the challenge of filling a movie of that scope, it wasn't entirely off the mark either. Sure, it was cheaper than the U.S. product, but still very entertaining, particularly for those who enjoy the genre.
I smell a franchise and it will be very interesting to see how it matures from a production standpoint.
