Review of Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) by P. P — 12 Feb 2013
This is good silly escapist fun. Detective Dee doesn't have the gravitas of Zhang Himou's Hero or the aesthetic beauty House of Flying Daggers but nonetheless it is far superior to any recent action comedies put out by Hollywood (i.
E. Pirates of the Carribean for example ewww). The story is playful and the sets are imaginative. Skillfully wrought fun to watch action sequences and I like the way they added a Sherlock Holmes twist to an old timey story about autocratic empresses and dissidents.
