Review of Detachment (2011) by Christopher K — 25 Jul 2012
From Tony Kaye who directed American History X comes a grim and hard hitting story about the US education system and the teachers who toil day after day in an almost hopeless environment. The writer clearly wants to make a point and does succeeds but it's dark and one sided.
Adrian Brody plays a complex character, a substitute teacher troubled by his childhood, compassionate but with difficulties to open up. This is a strong story with great dialogues and great performances, especially from Brody and the young girl who he saves.
With many closeups and grainy gray photography, the feeling of hopelessness is reinforced. This is a heavy film that addresses serious questions around education, mental health and the responsibility of parents.
Beautiful. Recommended if you have the strength.
