Review of Detachment (2011) by Josephine I — 21 Dec 2013
Schools out for summer. Schools out forever!
This movie is a shallow, pretentious, irritating, symbolism heavy pile of crap which relies heavily on filming with a black and white filter and sepias for certain scenes to give it a gritty, serious look. This movie feels really long because it goes nowhere and it is boring, very, very boring. It forgets the old saying; "Shouting and Screaming for 2 hours does not a good movie make" which is close to disasterous.
It has an irritating tendency to reiterate it's message that "You are fucked because school" and "This man had a fucked up life" so much that it in essence, those messages are the entire movie. All the characters in this movie are stupid. Incredibly stupid. The protagonist who is a male teacher who is the person with the aforementioned "fucked up life" and he houses a random homeless teenager and tries to make it seem as if he isn't hitting on a fat chick. Which reminds me of another stupid scene, the fat chick gives the teacher a hug while he explains that he doesn't love her and another teacher enters the room and implies that inappropriate contact was initiated because the teacher put his hand on her arm without gripping and stroking.
He then shouts and throws tables and goes home. Later on the fat chick overdoses by putting unspecified powder in a cupcake which would've probably disintegrated under such heat required to make cupcakes and then the teacher tries to give her CPR... For an overdose!
Stay away from this movie like AIDS.
