Review of Detachment (2011) by Pierluigi F — 05 Feb 2014
Another totally unexpected gem. Amazing movie with all the pieces in the right place. The (hard) topic is handled with care and managed with great acting by the whole cast, Tony Kaye directed it in a wonderful intimate feeling, able to make the audience perceive the heavy weight of the discomfort. The rhythm is pretty slow but that's exactly the feeling that must be felt.. like when in the end talking to the class Adrien Brody says "When you're walking down the hallway, or in your classroom, how many of you have ever felt the weight pressing down on you?",.
That's exactly the point.
*** SPOILER *** Weird how, toward the end Adrien falls into the trick of being a victim of the system he is fighting, even if this can be seen as a (proper) moment of weakness due to the events that "forced" his detachment to another level *** SPOILER END ***.
Absolutely one of the most intimate and beautiful movie about education and its difficult struggle in our times. I would consider this a must see.
