Review of Destroy All Monsters (1968) by Steve J — 15 Mar 2008
I wanted to see this movie for YEARS before it was finally released in America, so maybe you'll forgive me for being slightly disappointed when it was finally released on DVD.
The special effects are fairly strong throughout, the music is good, the monster suits are nice with Godzilla and Anguirus looking especially good, but the final battle with all Earth's monsters vs King Ghidorah is a TERRIBLY mismatch and Ghidorah is easily dispatched for the most part. If the teams had been more even, this would've been TREMENDOUS.
As it was, Godzilla, Gorosaurus and Anguirus wear Ghidorah out while Minya prances around, Rodan flies away (I hate that part) Mothra and Kumonga occasionally spew some webbing, and Baragon, Manda and Varan....do nothing because they are puppets and are hanging out off screen.
It's not bad at all, it's just not the epic that a lot of people say, in my opinion. Still, its fun to see so many monsters on screen at once, though a little more varied interaction would've been nice.
