Review of Destroy All Monsters (1968) by James S — 24 Jan 2010
To call this a Godzilla movie would not be accurate. This film is the leader of this genre of monster movies. It easily must have had the largest budget of any movies of this era with over a half dozen monsters running around and sets of actual buildings that they got to smash and fall on instead of a generic outdoor scene with cheesey partly cloudy set up like 1960's pro wrestling in the local armory. This was the best attempt of making this type of movie global with the monsters attacking other cities besides Toky or other countries besides Japan (how accurate the sets were is debatable).
As with most movies of this genre, the plot is weak at best. It is also a bit humorous when looking at the voices used for the English versions (Akira Kubo played the indestructable John Wayne type character who was not afraid of anyone and would have taken on all of the monsters single handedly if the movie budget would have permitted and was given a very aggressive macho voice, where he played a timid geek in Monster Zero, thus was given a lighter Bobby Vinton voice).
If you like this type of movie, you will enjoy this (action is a little week, even when the monsters hook it up). If you don't, watch Gigli instead.
