Review of Destination Wedding (2018) by Drew C — 22 Oct 2018
Destination Wedding.
Destination Wedding is an independent movie made on a low budget (rumored at $1 mill), and staring two A-listers, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. They must owe writer/director Victor Levin a blood debt, because every scene involves them spewing overwrought dialogue attempting to be witty and sour at the same time. It is like Conan O'Brian trying to be funny on Late Nite, or, more accurately, someone scratching a blackboard to the constant cadence of a metronome. Normally, two major movie stars like Reeves and Ryder would blow the "above the line" budget off the tracks, stopping such trite fare at the starting gate. But, nope, this boorish snooze fest got made and brought in a whopping $1,485,282 at the box office (and that includes international receipts). If you were an investor in this self-indulgent experiment, call your lawyer or consult your shrink for investing in this piece of swampland. I doubt Levin put his own money into this social experiment, and the 8 executive producers attached thereto is the tipoff. During an interview about this movie, Levin stated that he likes grumpy people, and opined that putting the spotlight on two of them for 90 minutes would make for a good movie. Sorry to disillusion you, but Hell No. It says a lot about Levin, and I suspect that his attitude was informed from the perspective of the kid that was constantly beat-up in high school.
