Review of Despicable Me 3 (2017) by Dustin D — 02 Jul 2017
Despicable Me 3 can't quite match up to its predecessors. It only gets 4 stars like with the second Despicable movie because I'm in a good mood at the moment and feel like playing nice with the nice third, oh I'm sorry, fourth film in the franchise.
It's an improvement over Minions, that's for sure. Just like with every Illumination Entertainment film, the animation becomes more visually dazzling than the last film. It's funny, although I was expecting more.
But maybe that's because I'm still calming down from laughing my way through The Lego Batman Movie. The fact that the Minions are just there for kiddie appeal and do nothing to contribute to the plot should make older audiences happy.
A scene where they're in prison also seems to be a case of Illumination referencing how everyone runs away whenever the Minions are present and how, despite mixed reviews, still made a billion dollars at the box office almost threatening Frozen's position as the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
There's some pretty entertaining voice acting too. Perhaps it doesn't quite match up to the first two movies but there's still some entertainment value. You barely earned four stars from me, DM3, just barely.
