Review of Despicable Me 3 (2017) by Gaz P — 05 Jul 2017
Despicable Me 3 hits the right notes for all the family - but only just.
The story is rather flat and somewhat obvious, but all can be forgiven in an animated film filled to the brim with slapstick comedy and double entendres. Alas, this movie is devoid of both - especially when it counts.
The story feels like it was written by three people, and it lacks direction. Steve Carrell does a great job of voicing two characters, but not even this can save the film. The story takes an unexpected turn for the worse at a point where it could have been great. But the choice of direction for Gru and his twin brother is both boring and tedious.
The lack of minions in the film will be noticed by adults and the kids will certainly miss their lack of screen time. This movie needed an injection of excitement and the introduction of the minions to really seal the deal.
Left wide open for a potential 4th instalment, fans of the franchise will be dubious about returning to the big screens unless a 4th instalment reduces the mushiness and gives the minions more screen time.
