Review of Despicable Me 3 (2017) by Lovro H — 31 Aug 2017
Just when you thought they ran out of ideas, Despicable Me 3 hits the cinemas and it, unsurprisingly, really isn't good. The story follows Gru, Lucy and their three adopted daughters. Gru and Lucy are now both secret agents on a mission to stop a villain called Evil Bratt who wants to steal a huge pink diamond (obviously a "Pink Panther" refference).
Unfortunately for them, they both get fired after failing to capture him and are now looking for a job. Meanwhile, Gru finds out he has a twin brother, Dru, and goes with his family to reunite with him.
That's generally the entire story. It's nothing we haven't seen before, but if there's one thing that's good about it, it's Trey Parker voicing Evil Bratt. Trey Parker is an amazing voice actor and it was a joy listening to him in this movie, even though he isn't nearly as funny as he is in South Park.
His character is stuck in the '80s and that's it. That's the whole joke surrounding his character. Gru's brother, Dru, is very rich and incapable of being a villain, but really wants to be one.
That's his character. Gru is the same as he was in the last movie. All the characters are very flat. There's nothing interesting about them. Sure, it's an animated kids movie, but that's not a worthy excuse to have such boring and unfunny characters.
Speaking of the characters, the minions have very little screen time and I couldn't have been happier. I used to love them when the first movie came out but I quickly realised a few years ago that they're incredibly annoying, unfunny and very cringe-inducing.
Thankfully, this movie doesn't have much of them and it focuses more on the Gru-Dru interactions. The voice-acting was very off, though. Almost none of the voices fit the characters, especially Steve Carell.
His accent in these movie is absolutely horrible and incredibly annoying. The animation, as well, is very dated. The first Despicable Me looks exactly the same as this one. It's very basic animation and they re-use a lot of the objects and characters which makes the whole movie look very bland and effortless.
I've noticed some of the characters in the background don't even have a face! Compared to other big animated movies, the Despicable Me movies aren't made for that much money but earn an amazing amount.
These movies aren't made for anything except for money. They're big cash grabs with cute little characters, lame and safe jokes, and heartfelt moments that really don't resonate well. All in all, Despicable Me 3 is not worth talking more about.
It's a throwaway, mediocre and safe cash grab that is not worth your time or money.
