Review of Despicable Me 3 (2017) by Reece L — 23 Jul 2017
The Despicable Me series is one of the best kids movies' series out there. It has humor to entertain adults and children. It's one of the things I love about the series. It also is a kids movie that's made 3 good (or decent) films, so applause for that.
That being said, this movie isn't nearly as funny as the first two. I laughed at some things in this movie, it just wasn't as consistently funny as the first two. Steve Carell's voice performance as Gru and his twin brother is great, just the script wasn't as solid as I know this series is capable of. It also didn't feel as original as the first two for the most part. Another great thing, however, was Trey Parker's talented performance as the villain. He's funny and sometimes intimidating. I love his voice acting on South Park, and he carried it through to this.
The other main problem I had with this movie was some of the character development. There were lots of opportunities. This movie showed that it wanted to go through with that and just didn't. It starts out plot lines that could have been interesting, and never finishes them. This could have been a lot more satisfying if it had just followed a certain plot line and showed character development and made the viewing expirience more enjoyable for the audience. This was something the first two films did a great job of and I wish this movie had carried through. Nonetheless, one of the plot lines is at least satisfied at the end, and there were character challenges between Gru and Dru that I really liked.
Overall, Despicable Me 3 might seem a little forced and have some plot lines it could expand on, but it has funny and heartfelt characters and great voice performances. It also has enough good humor like the first two films without stretching out or repeating jokes. Fans of the series and kids will enjoy it!
