Review of Despicable Me 3 (2017) by Bradley J — 24 Jul 2017
Illumination Entertainment sits near the bottom of the creative totem pole when it comes to the quality of their animated films. Sans the original Despicable Me and the delightful Sing released last year, they have failed to put in the requisite effort required to really excel against the likes of Pixar and Dreamworks.
Me 3 actually is an improvement upon the scattershot and emotionless sequel, but it still proves just as mindlessly frenetic and unfocused as other Illumination films. It provides a fun villain in Balthazar Bratt and brings Gru front and center again, relegating the Minions to their rightful comedic supporting roles.
It has sweeter moments than the second and is more amusing as well, but it feels episodic in a way that fails to progress the series in a further direction story wise. Rating: 60.
