Review of Despicable Me (2010) by James W — 01 Nov 2013
Although the animation isn't as sharp as some of the Disney or Pixar movies, Despicable Me succeeds pretty much in every other department. For comedy it has huge laughs, sticking three orphaned sisters in an evil masterminds house filled with little yellow minions is the perfect concoction for laughter.
The Minions are the undoubtedly the best creation to ever grace an animated movie, each and every one of them has a personality but they are all equally funny, and cute. The story is solid, I love the idea of a shrink ray being used to shrink the moon, therefore giving Gru the main character the title of "Greatest thief ever", but it's the young sisters who get in his way, but eventually make they begin to pull on his heartstrings and he realises that company is better than loneliness.
The 3D is great, the depth is convincing in most scenes and the extending of objects out the screen are enough to seriously make you jaw dropped. The animation is good but there's not enough detail in the film's landscape, close ups of faces and houses are impressive, as well as vehicles but the actual world of Despicable Me needs a bit of a polish.
Still, this is a fantastic family fun movie that's worthy of many watches, and it's done so well that there is already a sequel out! More Minions!
