Review of Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) by Jay R — 20 Jul 2010
A comedy of mistaken identity that works because Rosnna Arquette is delightful and Madonna struts around being trashy. It's almost like GTA meets The Sims inside a chick flick. For a movie aimed at women, they don't get treated too well here, multiple scenes feature men in some kind of power (security guards, policemen) just flat-out pushing them around, while others shove guns right in their face.
It's almost funny, since the film doesn't have any real point except to entertain for under two hours, it's even directed by a woman (a Susan in fact!). Taken as an 80s artifact, with Arquette's charm and Madonna's personality, it's fun, even if a seen-it-already subplot about stolen earrings takes up a chunk of the running time (though Will Patton does give a memorably odd performance).
