Review of Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) by Julia P — 29 Jun 2011
A case of mistaken identity (perpetuated by a bout of amnesia) and other Dickensian coincidences cause a bored suburban housewife and a carefree drifter step into each other's shoes. Good performances by Roseanna Arquette and Madonna as the mixed up women highlight the differences between the two lifestyles, neither of which is completely satisfying.
The concept is sound (in its own unlikelihood) with plenty of potential for comedy that's never quite fully realized. With the exception of a few select one-liners, it's a mostly joyless affair just going through the motions.
Well intentioned, but has not aged well.
