Review of Desperate Living (1977) by Damien K — 15 Jun 2009
(Why is the only option available marked "edited version"?- I'm sure I saw the original... if not I can't begin to imagine what the unedited version would be like; YIKES!).
This is the first movie I saw by John Waters. I LOVED the opening scene, and fell in love with Mink Stole immediately. After that I repeated "NO WAY' like a mantra. I was in total shock half the time and literally disgusted the other half. But that must have been the intention. After more than a dozen viewings, I have to say that there is something genius about this movie on many levels- the fact that it exists astounds me to begin with. Once initial shock wore off, I was able to appreciate the deeper significance of the insightful and incisive social commentary that this movie represents.
