Review of Desperado (1995) by Skyler I — 29 Jun 2011
While Desperado may not be my favorite Robert Rodriguez film, it's still a good one. The biggest problem that I had with this was that it was basically Rodriguez's first Mariachi film, El Mariachi, only with a bigger budget.
Some settings are exactly the same as in the first one, as is the main bad guy. Still, Antonio Banderas is excellent and suits the role perfectly, as do Steve Buscemi, Danny Trejo, Salma Hayek and Quentin Tarantino.
Some portions of the film seem a bit sloppy, especially compared to Rodriguez's later work, but overall it's a pretty damn good movie that also pays homage to older films whose concepts were as equally wacky as this ones.
