Review of Desperado (1995) by Andry R — 29 Mar 2011
*EL SPOILERO*.
Sequel to the classic El Mariachi and Robert Rodriguez' first big budget shoot em up. It's good but a bit of a disappointment compared to the original. I wish they had stuck with the original mariachi instead of recasting with Antonio Banderas. Never been a huge fan of his, but otherwise solid choices for supporting cast. Highlight for me was Danny Trejo lobbing throwing knives at Antonio. This movie is highly stylized, as would become Rodriguez' trademark, yet it suffers from a simplistic plot (FIND THE BAD GUY!). Action scenes are great and some of the best in the genre. Overall it is a really good film but lacks the charm of the first. Still highly watchable but has its flaws.
