Review of Desperado (1995) by Zak S — 30 Oct 2013
Super fun action scenes. The opening segment where Buscemi recounts the story from the previous bar is amazing. Love the exaggerated imagining of Mariachi. When his face is in the shadows and stays there.
.. Mmmmm. So good. The hand cannon. People flying across the room after getting shot? Amazing. Quentin Tarantino's little story was expectedly unnecessary. So many scenes that are just exaggerated action tropes, but done in a seemingly genuine way.
Walking away from the giant explosion. What? The sex scene was more graphic than it needed to be for sure. But that's what Robert Rodriguez does. He just takes everything to the extreme. Sometimes that does more harm than good, but I wouldn't want him to do it any other way.
His lack of restraint is what makes him awesome. He's like Tarantino in that sense. His comedy sprinkles are really fun too. Scenes like the one where Salma Hayek is singing with her eyes closed and Antonio Banderas is following silhouettes with his guns until they are both pointed at Salma and then he kicks her off the bed and starts shooting.
That scene is great. It makes no sense, but it's great. I enjoyed this movie very much, and I'm going to give it a slightly higher rating than I should. [4/5 STARS] [100813].
