Review of Desperado (1995) by Ben J — 04 May 2011
There are a couple moments like a ridiculous sex scene and the main characters walking away from an explosion, but there are also a couple scenes that play with tension and humor in a great way - hiding behind the counter in the bookstore, waking up in the morning to find gunmen. Those were great and I hope to be able to make scenes like that some day. In the end the mix of humor and action won me over.
Normally I don't think I would give a movie where someone shoots a rocket out of a guitar case and 8/10, but the humor and tone weren't dumb. It felt like a smart movie, like a clever movie, even if it did go overboard a few times. But I think because I knew that they director wasn't just being "dumb", but rather having fun with some cliches, it worked.
And I just loved the main character. Such a great energy from Antonio Banderas.
