Review of Desperado (1995) by Phil P — 16 Sep 2012
"So, I'm sitting there, and in walks the biggest Mexican I have ever seen.".
Rodriguez's reworking of his original 'El Mariachi' taking the same basic premise but changing it to what i'd imagine was his original plan. I haven't seem the source but I seems like he took stop down with this version.
'Desperado' is choke full of cool action sequences with dance-like gun fights and lots of jumping backwards off buildings. it's a stylish film but he story-line is something to be desired and it never seems like Banderas's character is in trouble despite being hunted by supposedly a guy who owns the whole town - it just doesn't make sense.
The guy who is trying to kill Banderas, Bucho is his brother, now if he's planning revenge for someone killing the women he loves how could have he not known it was his brother, another aspect not plausible. yet again - the romantic interest Haymek seems to fall for him during her 'phase' of disliking him which makes zero sense. It's quite irritating because the story is so weak it holds the film back from being great - It muddles things that should be pretty easy.
The action is what saves this film and the stylish way it goes about it - it may not have the best set of gun-wielding scenes and a pretty terrible plot that is easily fixable. But who doesn't want a guitar case with a 'Rocket Launcher' in it?
