Review of Descent (2007) by Cody U — 18 Dec 2011
I never got around to reviewing this film when I first saw it. I recently re-watched it during a meeting of my movie criticism class and it was just as good as I remembered. Now, there's nothing groundbreaking about this movie or anything like that, but it does have its moments.
My favorite thing about this movie is the all-female cast. That is extremely a-typical for the horror genre. The overall story is good, and the film is certainly well shot. In fact, that would probably be my second favorite thing about it, the cinematography.
One thing that's very effective once the girls enter the cave is the feeling of claustrophobia that consumes the entire last 2/3rd's of the film. You definitely feel trapped down there with them.
Something else that consumes the last 2/3rd's of this film is the unrelenting violence. This movie definitely has some great gory violence. Even though the creatures in the cave are never fully explained, they still manage to terrify and prove themselves to be unique movie monsters.
This was a good second film from Neil Marshall, and I look forward to seeing what his next project will be after his most recent, Centurion.
