Review of Descent (2007) by Stephen M — 18 Jun 2012
This film gets a lot of praise as one of the greatest horror films of the 2000's, and perhaps we should be looking to give it higher accolades. I really believe this one is a fresh, genuinely scary horror film easily capable of taking a place firmly within the Top 50 Horror Films of All-Time.
There was careful build-up before the action, and this film really made me feel uncomfortable. I had to give myself a break just after the scene where Rebecca (Saskia Mulder) became trapped. It really made me feel claustrophobic and I liked the fact that the mutants, unlike antagonists in many horror films were not indestructible, and had their weaknesses. They were killed (relatively) easily and were blind. For me, the setting itself really took precedence in the hopelessness and fear generated.
Great performances all round really sealed the deal on this one. Absolutely brilliant, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see how horror should be done, or anyone who fancies a reet-good scare.
