Review of Descent (2007) by Joe A — 18 Oct 2012
One of my favorite horrors. Neil Marshall creates a truely scary and suspenseful rollercoaster ride as 6 women on a cave exploring expedition get lost in an undiscovered system and find out they are not alone.
Claustrophobic and tense even before the creatures show up, then when they do, the real nightmare begins. One of the reasons it's so successful is that the women are all likable three dimensional characters.
It has impact when they come to harm. There is even a pesonal conflict between two of them that adds an extra dynamic to an already intense last act. The cave itself becomes a character as Marshall filmed the movie using only the light the girls themselves use, to light the scenes.
It gives a better illusion that the viewer is with our heroines as they move through the underground labyrinth. The cave's inhabitants are kept in shadows and seen briefly, which keeps them scary and Marshall even imbues them with a bit of character so they become more real to his audience.
Very intense, very gory and one of the best horror flicks of the last decade. Watch it in the dark!
