Review of Descent (2007) by Steve J — 16 Aug 2014
Not just a great horror film, but a great movie all around. Next to this most other filmmakers working in the genre seem like pretty small potatoes. Eli Roth only wishes he could do what this film does.
The plot is simple: a group of female spelunkers get lost in an underground cave. Tempers flare, paranoia and hallucination set in...and then the women realize they're not alone. To say any more would be to ruin it for those who haven't seen it.
Suffice it to say that this incredibly grim, effective horror cinema. The gore and violence are strong, but it never feels tacked-on or cheap. It's just an amazingly well-crafted film that needs to be seen by every student of contemporary cinema.
