Review of Descent (2007)

By Bill Muller (519) for Arizona Republic (3,909) on 03 Aug 2006

Sorry, George Lucas, but CGI creatures usually look pretty fake; the crawlers, however, are quite realistic and creepy, especially as they…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Maryann Johanson (2,701) for Flick Filosopher (2,694) on 03 Aug 2006

It may sound bizarre to say that a film about women under threat of vicious, violent death is a triumph of feminism, but there we are…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Dave White (762) for Movies.com (1,002) on 03 Aug 2006

It's just what you want in a horror film -- steadily building suspense, a smart script, actual fear, claustrophobia, tons of gore and brutality,…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Ian Grey (27) for Orlando Weekly (1,048) on 02 Aug 2006

Aside from its high concept -- instead of Snakes on a Plane, it's Chicks in a Cave (with monsters!) -- place-setting is almost all Marshall does…

Review of Descent (2007)

By John Monaghan (292) for Detroit Free Press (942) on 02 Aug 2006

You genuinely care about the six women who enter a cave in the Appalachian mountains, only to discover it crawling with flesh-eating predators…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Derek Elley (230) for Variety (12,700) on 02 Aug 2006

An object lesson in making a tightly-budgeted, no-star horror pic work through razor-sharp technique and committed performances alone…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Manohla Dargis (1,909) for New York Times (5,786) on 02 Aug 2006

The babes are buff and the scares bountiful in Neil Marshall's full-throttle horror freakout about six women on a caving expedition…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Stephen Hunter (927) for Washington Post (9,851) on 02 Aug 2006

[Marshall] does have a nice taste for horror imagery: The first glimpse of one of the creatures, as debased and revolting and craven as a living…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Michael Wilmington (1,474) for Chicago Tribune (6,211) on 02 Aug 2006

The Descent is simply a shock-'em, shake-'em genre piece with scare scenes that, however effective, suggest cheap-shop versions of a lot we've…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Stephen Williams (9) for Newsday (2,345) on 02 Aug 2006

The Descent doesn't need to exist: a script that goes beyond outlandish. Actors who'd flunk out of Make Believe 101…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Steve Murray (153) for Atlanta Journal-Constitution (910) on 02 Aug 2006

Marshall understands that sometimes there's nothing quite as oddly exhilarating as the bleakest, no-way-out kind of horror…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Gary Dowell (222) for Baltimore City Paper (18) on 02 Aug 2006

A number of narrative twists keep you guessing and, while the pace stays strong and steady, building the gory mayhem to a bloody crescendo…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Andrew Wright (312) for The Stranger (Seattle, WA) (891) on 01 Aug 2006

Hugely claustrophobic and skin-crawlingly intense ... and then the flesh-eating monsters come out…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Rob Nelson (320) for Village Voice (8,525) on 01 Aug 2006

Not since John Sayles and Joe Dante unleashed Piranha and The Howling on Hollywood's New Morning have two features torn open the horror movie…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Alex Sandell (357) for Juicy Cerebellum (357) on 01 Aug 2006

For horror fans and those who love things that go bump in the night, this is one not to miss…

By Harvey S. Karten (2,210) for Compuserve (1,948) on 30 Jul 2006

This may have an all-female cast but the visually stunning blood-and-gore horror tale is anything but a chick-flick…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Cole Smithey (1,865) for ColeSmithey.com (1,853) on 28 Jul 2006

The Descent succeeds thoroughly as a horror film, based on the filmmakers' diligent attention to fundamental genre elements…

Review of Descent (2007)

By Brian Juergens (209) for Freeze Dried Movies (80) on 27 Jul 2006

A harrowing, brutal piece of work -- my hand was over my mouth for the last 30 minutes, lest I scream like a little girl on fire. Not to be missed…
