Review of Descent (2005) by Dan S — 24 Feb 2013
Much better first half (soap opera, claustrophobia, rising suspense) than second (all out underground insanity, uberGollums vs Ellen Ripley). Yet the shift from survivalist drama to gore-soaked creature feature is certainly original.
Amazing sets, yet terribly bombastic OTT music. Marshall is fantastic at building suspense, and there are a few genuine, earned shocks, but on this basis he's crap at action scenes, hoping blurred movement and choppy edits with disguise discontinuity.
Yet all told, interesting, original and scary enough for me to never go caving again.
