Review of Descent (2005) by Sjl R — 26 May 2011
In atmosphere, pace and attention to ambient detail, this movie reminds me of my favorite film of all time: Alien. The tension of the first half evokes Touching the Void more than a monster movie, something which sets this movie apart in of iteself. By founding the tension of the film on the very real dangers of cave exploration (cave collapses, claustrophobia, disorientation, paranoia), We the Audience already have our adrenaline pumping steady by the time the intensity really kicks up a few notches.
Anymore, it's rare that a horror movie has me unconsciously gripping onto nearby furniture and/or friends but this is a film that just does not stop. The pacing masterfully escalates the suspense to its unbelievable climax, never once feeling drawn-out or tedious. This movie renewed my faith in the future of horror.
