Review of Dersu Uzala (1961) by Laurence H — 07 Jan 2010
This is simply my favourite movie ever. The character of Dersu is sensitively drawn and developed, and his interactions with the Russian cartographic team are luminous. The natural landscape is magnificent, and Dersu's place in it is always the central focus of the story.
That is, this is a film about relationships that remains true to its mission start to finish. If there is any scar on the film, it is the influence of Kurosawa's apparent depressive episode on Dersu's untimely end, which I found credible but perhaps incongruous.
No better film has ever been made, in my opinion. I have watched this many times, beginning shortly following its release.
