Review of Derrida (2002) by Paul S — 23 May 2009
I thought it was pretty mediocre. The reason I watched it is that I don't know much about his work. I don't feel like I learned much from the movie itself, but the DVD extras had some interesting interview clips that I found more illuminating.
I don't want to draw conclusions about him just from this, but he seemed rather condescending throughout and quite contradictory. He wanted to know about other philosophers' sexual life but refused to answer any such questions about himself.
I thought it was surprising that he went on and on about Self and the Other, but yet refused any meaningful self-reflection. Again, it might be just because of the way this was edited, even though in the extras it seems that they had some very creative ideas during the process that they gave up in order to not distort anything.
I loved the music though, it was quite appropriate.
