Review of Den of Thieves (2018) by Matthew D — 30 Apr 2018
Den of Thieves is Derivative of Heat, But Engaging Enough.
Den of Thieves is the latest in the long line of heist films striving for greatness that ends up repeating what Heat already did before but better. It's thrilling action shoot-outs and highly coordinated heist sequences combine for an entertaining film experience. Most will find it simplistic and contrived in plot and drama, but it is well made. There is nothing new in Den of Thieves, but the threat and con is convincing.
Gerard Butler is completely sleazy and stern, while the stand out star is definitely the massive monster Pablo Schreiber. The leads are as cliche as can be, but they pull off their performances aptly. O'Shea Jackson Jr. is a fun highlight as he is in every movie he is cast in lately. I think most viewers will like him the most. 50 Cent is decent in his supporting role, but sadly he is relegated to a smaller side part. Overall, the acting is believable, but hindered by the basic script.
Nice choreography and effects contribute to Den of Thieves' appeal. You may be confused by the muddled plot, but it remains enjoyable throughout. Director Christian Gudegast pays tribute to classics like Heat and The French Connection, but he never reaches such brilliant heights. Den of Thieves is sufficiently competent, so it is still respectable.
Not the best 2018 has to offer, but Den of Thieves works as a popcorn stuffing feast that is fun for an afternoon watch. The convoluted narrative, underwritten characters, passable performances, predictable plot, and decent direction leave Den of Thieves an adequate heist thriller that will satisfy. I wish it were more impressive though.
