Review of Demonlover (2002) by Alex C — 01 Feb 2008
Yeah, I was somewhat disappointed. Promising plotline, daring moments, a marketing as a "banned/censored" risque film. But I got more out of Hartley's PG "Amateur", and was less insulted.
Oh, that's because the intended audience ain't me, and I accept that. This is very, knowingly feminist minded, strong female wills with college degrees and technical backgrounds negotiate the business end of adult business.
So it's shocking if you come at this from the: conservative religious "how dare they do that, don't they know their place" or the academic gender studies AHTSIR leftist crowd. If not, it seems naive and implausible.
Just a bit too corporate, just a bit missing the point a bit [I mean that fallacly]. Yeah it's got a digital camera David Lynch thing going on too, tight artistic colorful visuals spliced together somewhat stridently.
You'll wonder: What is the point with Connie Nielsen's character? Who is she working for? Why is she doing it? An unsolved mystery, mostly because you don't think the writers took the time to figure it.
