Review of Demonic Toys (1992) by Vince F — 02 Jun 2008
I bow my head in shame as I use to get some sort of amusing thrill out of this when I was kid. Killer toys was very appealing to me then.
Alas, now grown movie fan as I am, maturity has gotten the better of me as I watched, stupefied, this apparent Full Moon production, a "horror" thriller that not only has a doll that swears (thank you notes To Chucky any day now please), but it has a kid demon with a scheme to impregnate himself in typically written female cop's weeks old fetus in another cliche device of world domination. Another cliche device is used of the entrapped in enclosed area with some threating force, a formula that can produce a film that can be quite good and/or amusing.
But this movie, has a one running joke gag, which is to have assortments of toys with vague personality traits spit a couple one liners here and there, and to kill the side characters with shoddy dime store effects. Other tidbits such as girls with gas masks riding tricycles, or an obnoxious jack in the box having hyper active episodes, or baby doll saying the "F-word" a many times fill the screen.
Well I guess the audience sits back and laughs at this.Certainly they will not laugh with it.Aghast, I sat and was mediating on such images, wondering who they would appeal to and why.
Horror fans deserve better, and certainly have seen better.
