Review of Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954) by James C — 13 May 2012
Follow up to "The Robe" has Victor Mature as a gladiator in Caligula's empire and bedding Susan Hayward (but offscreen as this is a Biblical Epic.) Jay Robinson is back as Caligula and chewing up what remaining scenery he missed from "The Robe.
" Look for an early performance by Anne Bancroft being totally wasted on this as well as a hunky Michael Conrad from "Hill Street Blues" and Julie Newmar as a dancer. Franz Waxman's epic score uses themes from Alfred Newman's music from "The Robe" to good effect.
