Review of Delivery Man (2013) by Jeramie K — 27 Dec 2013
Delivery Man falls victim to what so many "comedy" films succumb to these days. It labels, promotes, and pushes itself as strictly comedy... Yet would rather blend the lines of genres with more serious and dramatic undertones. These undertones are not merely blips on the radar, either... they are consistent themes pushed onto the audience throughout the length of the film.
Vince Vaughn does an OK enough job in his role, but what else is expected when a schmuck is asked to play a schmuck in a movie?
The premise is fairly interesting but the writing does the film no favors, settling for situational comedy to try and lift the spirits of an otherwise drab and depressing theme.
The constant berating of dramatic elements, and the film as a whole, feels like a public drudging. It's painful and humiliating -- but occasionally somebody comes along, throws a tomato in your face, and everyone can have a mostly silent chuckle.
If you can help it, avoid seeing this drab, disappointing, and mislabeled "comedy".
